Witches, Folklore & Forgotten Stories

Across cultures and centuries, the idea of the witch has taken many forms. The Oracle of Forgotten Witches embraces that diversity, looking beyond a single tradition or familiar image of witchcraft to the many figures who have occupied its borders.

Recognizable names such as Hecate, Lilith, Morgan le Fay, Marie Laveau, and Baba Yaga appear alongside lesser-known figures and beings whose stories invite further discovery. Witches mingle with spirits, familiars, deities, magical objects, and enchanted places, allowing the deck to move freely between history, mythology, folk belief, and imagination.

An Alchemical Journey

The Oracle of Forgotten Witches is structured around the Great Work of alchemy, with its 60 cards arranged into ten suits that trace an alchemical journey.

Beginning with the shadowy territory of the Curse-bringers and the transformative energy of the Shape-shifters, the journey moves through survival and consequence, truth and deception, healing and knowledge, transitions between worlds, relationships, and finally the guidance and destiny of the Fate-turners.

The suits do more than organize the cards. Together they create a progression through confrontation, transformation, discovery, and renewal, giving individual cards a larger context within the deck.

Working with the Oracle

Each card combines an illustration, theme, keyword, and suit, giving you several ways into its meaning. The accompanying guidebook expands upon the folklore behind each figure and offers additional context for exploring the card.

Read a single card as a message for the day, carry one as a talisman, or bring several together in a spread. The guidebook introduces four spreads created specifically for the oracle: Storyweaving, Hecate, Pentagram, and Magnum Opus.

Perhaps the most distinctive is the Storyweaving Spread. Use the cards to construct a folktale, allowing its characters, places, and objects to lead your imagination in unexpected directions. You can then look back at the story almost as you would a dream, considering the connections between the tale you created and your own life.

About the Creators

Balázs Tátrai is a writer whose unusual stories are rooted in folklore and branch into the unexpected. His interests in alchemy and seventeenth-century iconography inform the deck's rich interplay of storytelling, symbolism, and transformation.

Lilla Bölecz is a visual artist working in book illustration, graphic art, dollmaking, and pattern design. Inspired by mysticism, spiritual experience, folklore, and literature, her atmospheric artwork gives The Oracle of Forgotten Witches its mysterious and unmistakable visual world.

Together, Tátrai and Bölecz previously created The Book of Forgotten Witches, the richly imagined world from which this oracle emerged.
