A Beginners Guide to the Tarot

Welcome to the Fools Journey

We're all on a Journey. Wouldn’t it be great to get some insights on the characters and events we're likely to encounter along the way ? Even better, wouldn’t it be great if we could take a step back and look at our own lives and understand how the pieces fit Together ? This is where the Tarot (and Oracle cards too) come in. The journey started at the beginning of time and the paths and stories of those before us are imprinted deep in our collective consciousness. Tarot Cards allow us to tap into these stories and discover what’s going on in our own life. The Cards act as a mirror to ourselves and invite us to dig deep to understand our own stories.

How do the Tarot Cards Work ?

First, it’s important to know that Tarot Cards have been used for hundreds of years with great results – and they can work for you too! But there is no single answer to how the cards work. For some the cards amplify the users intuitive or psychic abilities. Others believe a spiritual force places the cards in a specific order to produce meaning. Still others follow a strict analytic path and study the card meanings. Many great readers combine these traditions by learning the card meanings and then call on their own intuition to give greater meaning to the question or situation at hand.

Finding and Connecting to a Deck

Some say that you should be gifted a deck. While it is a lovely idea to gift someone a deck it’s not necessarily the best way to get started. The best Tarot readers feel a deep connection with their deck so if a particular deck is calling to you then we suggest that that is the best deck for you to start with.

Many Tarot readers start with a Rider Waite deck and continue to study it year after year. It's the world’s most popular deck for a reason - the cards are full of rich and accessible symbolism that allow one to tap into deep universal truths and patterns.

Time to Jump in

TarotArts suggests that you start out by picking a card a day – Find a quite time at the beginning or end of the day. Pick one Card at random and ask yourself how does this card reflect on the story of this day and your place in it. Feel free to pick up a book that helps you understand the images and symbolism in the deck. Rachel Pollack, Barbara Moore, Liz Dean and Johannes Fiebig are great tarot luminaries and have authored excellent books to help you get started on your journey. In no time at all the cards will help you uncover previously hidden truths that you can apply to you own live and share with others.
