The Art of the Linocut

Every image in The Brady Tarot began as an original linocut, meticulously carved by hand, inked, and printed on paper before being individually colored with gouache. Emi Brady created the original series of prints between 2017 and 2018, bringing an extraordinary level of craftsmanship and attention to detail to each composition.

Bold carved lines, intricate textures, and richly layered colors give the artwork a character that feels both timeless and vividly alive. The physical nature of the printmaking process is evident throughout, lending each image a distinctive depth and individuality. Brady's approach also recalls the early history of Tarot production, when decks such as the Tarot de Marseille were created using relief printing and hand coloring.

Yet the artistry extends beyond the printmaking itself. Brady draws on the actual behaviors, habitats, and relationships of North American animals and plants, allowing their natural characteristics to illuminate familiar Tarot archetypes. The result is a richly symbolic visual language that invites readers to discover unexpected connections between traditional Tarot meanings and the living world.

A Beautifully Expanded Third Edition

The third edition of The Brady Tarot brings together the original artwork with new cards, expanded interpretations, and a beautifully upgraded presentation.

The 80-card deck includes both the original Strength card and a newly created second version, along with an entirely new card, The Great Mystery.

One of the most compelling additions, The Great Mystery explores themes of creation, hope, renewal, and the unseen forces that shape our lives. Its striking imagery moves from darkness and turbulent waters toward light and new growth, reflecting the possibility of transformation even in times of uncertainty.

In her accompanying interpretation, Brady considers the relationship between individual gifts and a greater purpose. The card suggests that finding a way forward is not simply a matter of waiting for answers, but of recognizing our own abilities and discovering how they might serve something beyond ourselves.

An Expanded Hardcover Guidebook Featuring Rachel Pollack

Accompanying the deck is a beautifully produced hardcover guidebook of more than 200 full-color pages, featuring the writing of Rachel Pollack, one of the most influential voices in modern Tarot, alongside new material by Emi Brady.

The book explores the meanings and symbolism of the cards, bringing together traditional Tarot interpretation with the natural histories of the animals and plants depicted throughout the deck. Full-color reproductions allow readers to appreciate the remarkable detail of Brady's original artwork.

For the third edition, Brady has expanded the book with reversed-card interpretations, additional reflections on the creative process, and a three-part artist's foreword.

More than a companion booklet, this substantial volume offers an engaging exploration of the deck's artistic vision and symbolic world, providing insight and inspiration for both beginning and experienced Tarot readers.

About the Artist — Emi Brady
