The Major Arcana: A Tarot of Hidden Structure and Initiation

At the core of the Baddeley Tarot is the idea that Tarot preserves a concealed initiatory pattern—an encoded spiritual sequence hidden within symbolism and order. The Major Arcana, referred to as The Greater Mysteries, depart from Rider–Waite–Smith and Marseille conventions to reflect a deliberate progression of the soul:

  • The Social Hierarchy (0–5)
  • The Virtues (6–10)
  • Wheel of Fortune (11)
  • The Adversities (12–16)
  • The Afterlife (17–21)

Card titles and numbering are adjusted to support this internal architecture, encouraging readers to engage with Tarot as a coherent philosophical system rather than an inherited sequence.

Minor Arcana: Interwoven Symbolic Systems

The Minor Arcana extends this structured approach through multiple, interlocking frameworks:

  • Sacred Geometry & the Ptolemaic Order — geometric backgrounds aligned with planetary spheres, moving from the elements through the cosmos to Earth
  • Astrological Correspondences — planets and zodiacal polarities marked directly on the cards, with additional meaning revealed through reversal
  • Elemental Structure — elements clearly indicated, with intentional departures from convention (Swords as Fire/action; Batons as Air)
  • Chakra Symbols — integrated on pips 3–9 as part of the deck’s cross-traditional esoteric language

Together, these systems reward careful observation, pattern recognition, and ongoing study.

Artwork & Guidebook

The artwork deliberately harks back to older visual traditions—Renaissance frescoes, early allegorical painting, and symbolic religious art—favoring formal composition, emblematic gesture, and layered imagery over modern illustrative shorthand. This historical aesthetic unifies the deck visually and philosophically, reinforcing its sense of Tarot as a single, coherent vision.

Rather than emphasizing quick emotional impressions, the artwork supports reflective and analytical reading, allowing symbols to unfold gradually within spreads. The 368-page illustrated guidebook is an essential companion, offering extensive insight into the deck’s symbolism, structure, and underlying philosophy.

About the Creator

Jake Baddeley is a painter and sculptor from Nottingham, UK.
