Every card in Solita Tarot began as an original hand-cut collage. Created by Los Angeles artist Sóla Saar, this contemporary collage tarot deck transforms those works into a surreal and richly symbolic reading experience that feels equally at home in an art collection or on a reading table.

Presented here in its Second Edition, the deck remains true to Saar’s original artistic vision while introducing redesigned versions of The Lovers and Justice, a newly designed presentation box, and full-color card images in the accompanying booklet.

What Makes This Deck Special

Solita Tarot emerged from an ambitious studio practice in which Sóla Saar created 92 original hand-cut analog collages inspired by tarot, mythology, and symbolic storytelling. From this larger body of work, she selected 78 collages that became the finished tarot deck.

The borderless presentation allows each composition to unfold without interruption, inviting readers to slow down, look closely, and discover unexpected relationships within the imagery.

The Second Edition preserves the character of the original deck while introducing newly redesigned versions of The Lovers and Justice, a newly designed presentation box, and an updated booklet with full-color images of the cards. These color reproductions are especially useful as a reference while becoming familiar with the untitled cards.

Reading Beyond the Card Titles

Unlike most tarot decks, Solita Tarot intentionally omits traditional card titles from the card faces, allowing each collage to stand on its own as a complete work of art. This thoughtful design choice invites readers to engage directly with the imagery and discover meaning through careful observation, intuition, and personal reflection rather than relying solely on familiar labels.

For many readers, this becomes one of the deck’s greatest strengths. The richly layered imagery continues to reveal new connections over time, rewarding slow exploration and repeated readings. Readers who are new to the deck can use the accompanying booklet as a reference while gradually becoming familiar with Saar’s visual interpretation of the cards.

The Art Behind the Cards

Solita Tarot reflects Saar’s approach to contemporary collage, bringing together imagery from varied visual traditions to create compositions that feel at once cinematic, enigmatic, playful, and psychologically charged. Themes of desire, vulnerability, identity, power, and transformation emerge through layered symbolism rather than literal illustration.

Some cards contain artistic nudity and provocative imagery. These elements are an intentional part of Saar’s broader artistic practice and are thoughtfully woven into the symbolic world of the deck. The result is artwork that invites reflection on the complexity of human experience without reducing the cards to a single fixed interpretation.

The Original Artwork Behind the Deck

Before Solita Tarot became a finished deck, its imagery existed as a series of original hand-cut analog collages exploring mythology, symbolism, and the visual language of tarot. Each collage stands as an independent work of contemporary art while also contributing to the larger narrative of the deck.

The original collage for The Chariot was selected for inclusion in Tarot! Renaissance Symbols, Modern Visions at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York, on view from June 26 through October 4, 2026. This recognition presents the original collage not simply as an illustration for a tarot deck, but as a contemporary artwork in its own right.

Visitors to TarotArts in South Pasadena can view Saar’s original collage for the Five of Cups, currently on display in the shop. Seeing the original artwork alongside its finished tarot card offers a rare opportunity to appreciate the journey from hand-cut collage to completed deck.

About the Creator

Sóla Saar is a Los Angeles–based collage artist, novelist, and arts writer. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, before earning her MFA in Fiction from Columbia University in 2018.

Her collage work has been exhibited at Harkawik, Roberts Projects, the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, Dominique Gallery, Head2Head Salon, and other contemporary art venues. Solita Tarot reflects her interdisciplinary practice, bringing together literature, visual art, mythology, and esoteric symbolism within a cohesive body of work.

Saar is a fourth-generation artist. She is the daughter of assemblage artist Lezley Saar, the niece of sculptor Alison Saar, and the granddaughter of acclaimed assemblage and installation artist Betye Saar. While her artistic voice is distinctly her own, her work continues a remarkable family tradition of exploring identity, narrative, symbolism, and transformation through assemblage and collage.
