The Art of Ritual Tarot

Tiera May creates Ritual Tarot through analog collage, building each image by hand from paper clippings rather than assembling it digitally. Images are removed from their original contexts, cut apart, juxtaposed, and reassembled into something entirely new. Changes of scale and unexpected relationships between figures, objects, animals, and landscapes become part of the visual language of the deck.

For Tiera, this process is closely connected to magick. Her practice treats art, poetry, myth, and symbol as ways of shaping and reimagining our relationship with the world. In Ritual Tarot, that philosophy becomes wonderfully tangible: 81 small worlds assembled from fragments, filled with details that reveal themselves gradually and invite you to return.

Reading with the Ritual Tarot

With no titles to interrupt the imagery, Ritual Tarot encourages you to begin simply by looking. A figure, animal, color, gesture, landscape, or unexpected detail may become the way into a card, opening associations that might be missed when its name and familiar meaning arrive first.

Read intuitively, follow the traditional Tarot structure, spend time with Tiera’s poetry and interpretations, or move between all three. Ritual Tarot leaves room for these approaches to meet, allowing a relationship with the cards to develop through repeated encounters with their imagery.

An Expanded Tarot

Ritual Tarot loosely follows the traditional structure of Tarot while expanding the Major Arcana. Its 81 cards include 25 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana, with the suits of Wands, Cups, Blades, and Coins.

Alongside the familiar Major Arcana are three additional cards: Lust, The Fool’s Journey, and The Aeon. The Aeon is new to this edition and draws inspiration from the Crowley-Harris Thoth Tarot, envisioned by Tiera as the Cosmic Child of Isis and Osiris and associated with primal fire, renewal, awakening, and becoming.

The Ritual Tarot Guidebook: A Poetic Guide to the Tarot

The accompanying hardcover book is conceived as a companion to the cards and a work in its own right. Each of the 81 images appears in full color alongside a guiding mantra, poetic meditation, divinatory description, and reversed reflection, moving between poetry, symbolism, and practical interpretation.

Tiera approaches these different elements as correspondences rather than answers. Her writing offers another path into the imagery while leaving the direction of the journey to the reader. The result is an unusually personal and immersive guide—part Tarot text, part poetry, and part extension of the artwork itself.

About Tiera May

Tiera May is an occult artist and independent publisher from Northern California, now living and working in the Pacific Northwest. Her practice is rooted in mythic imagery and worldbuilding, exploring the places where art, symbol, ritual, waking life, and dream intersect.

Her work is published through Hedge-Rider Press. Ritual Tarot grew from an exhibition of Major Arcana collages and a first crowdfunded printing of just 50 decks into the project that ultimately allowed Tiera to pursue her art and independent publishing full time.
