The Philosophy of LUX

LUX is built upon the belief that tarot is more than a system of meanings—it is a practice of attention.

Rather than asking readers to search for one fixed interpretation, the deck encourages us to slow down, observe carefully, and recognize the truths we may already carry within ourselves. Meaning arises through the relationship between the card, the reader, the question, and the particular moment in which the reading takes place.

UUSI has described LUX as a somatic tarot: a deck that speaks not only to the intellect, but also to sensation, intuition, memory, and the wisdom of the body. Its images communicate through gesture, contrast, rhythm, repetition, and atmosphere. A reading becomes less about arriving at the correct answer and more about entering into a conversation with the cards.

This quieter approach values curiosity over certainty and discovery over definition. LUX does not rush to explain itself. It rewards repeated return, allowing its imagery and symbolic relationships to unfold gradually as the reader’s own experience deepens.

Reading with LUX Tarot

LUX offers enough familiarity for readers who understand traditional tarot while leaving considerable space for personal discovery. The Major Arcana presents recognizable archetypal forces through UUSI’s distinctive visual language. The Minor Arcana retains the four traditional suits, but its imagery often communicates through composition, pattern, and symbolic relationship rather than through fully illustrated narrative scenes.

Readers familiar with Marseille-style decks may feel at home with its underlying structure. Those accustomed to scenic Minor Arcana may find that LUX asks for a different kind of engagement—one based less on recalling a prescribed story and more on observing what the image awakens in the present moment.

The deck is especially well suited to reflective readings, meditation, journaling, and practices that allow meaning to develop slowly. It can be read traditionally, but it also invites experimentation: noticing recurring forms, tracing visual rhythms through a spread, or beginning with the physical and emotional response a card evokes before turning to established meanings.

Beyond the Traditional 78 Cards

LUX expands the traditional tarot with five Luna cards and an additional card known as The Seeker. These six cards are not simply decorative additions. Together, they deepen the philosophy at the heart of the deck.

The Luna cards reflect the Moon’s changing phases and the larger cycles of illumination, darkness, release, renewal, and transformation. They may be incorporated into readings with the full deck or explored as a small sequence of their own. Rather than presenting life as a straight path toward certainty, they remind us that understanding changes with time and that periods of darkness can be as meaningful as moments of revelation.

The Seeker serves a different purpose. It is not another archetype encountered along the tarot journey. It represents the person entering the reading—the one who approaches the cards with questions, openness, and a willingness to encounter what has not yet been fully understood.

UUSI describes The Seeker as a talismanic presence. It can accompany a reading as a representation of the reader or querent, but its deeper role is to remind us that tarot begins with curiosity rather than certainty.

The Luna cards describe the cycles. The Seeker is the one moving through them.

Together, these additional cards transform LUX from an interpretation of the traditional tarot into a fuller expression of UUSI’s philosophy: that insight unfolds gradually through attention, participation, and repeated discovery.

The Book of LUX

Readers who are drawn to the philosophy of LUX may also enjoy The LUX Book of Sonnets, available separately.

Rather than serving as a traditional guidebook or providing interpretations for individual cards, the book is a collection of original sonnets and poetic reflections by Peter Dunham and Linnea Gits. Small card images help connect each piece with its corresponding card, but the focus remains firmly on the poetry and the ideas that inspired the deck.

The tarot stands beautifully on its own, and the book is not required for reading with it. For those who wish to spend more time with the questions, atmosphere, and contemplative vision behind LUX, however, it offers another way to explore the philosophy that lies at the heart of the deck.
