Two Realities Held at Once

At the heart of The Unveiled Tarot is the idea that seemingly contradictory realities do not necessarily cancel one another out.

A beginning can contain possibility and danger. Domestic life can provide comfort while concealing desires that have been pushed beneath the surface. Solitude can become isolation or offer the stillness necessary for wisdom. What appears ordinary from one perspective may look entirely different when another layer is revealed.

Lonergan creates these relationships by placing archetypal tarot imagery inside scenes drawn from contemporary life. The two images may create harmony or dissonance, but neither necessarily provides the complete answer.

There is something distinctly magical in this way of seeing. Instead of asking which reality is true, the cards invite us to consider what becomes visible when both are allowed to be true at once.

Reading with The Unveiled Tarot.

Readers familiar with traditional tarot will recognize the structure and archetypes of the deck, but the imagery encourages you to approach them from unexpected directions.

The Fool is not simply an innocent beginning, but a journey whose consequences cannot yet be known. The Hermit’s lantern becomes a streetlamp in the middle of the modern city, finding contemplation not through withdrawal from the world, but by becoming still within it. The Devil interrupts an ordinary portrait of domestic life, revealing the desires and contradictions that may exist beneath an apparently perfect surface.

In this sense, the cards can sometimes feel almost like encountering the upright and reversed possibilities of an archetype simultaneously—not as prescribed meanings, but as different potentials held within the same image.

This makes The Unveiled Tarot especially compelling for readers who already know the traditional cards and want a deck that will challenge familiar interpretations rather than simply illustrate them again.

The Art of Jesse Lonergan

Jesse Lonergan brings the visual language of comics into his approach to tarot.

Instead of treating each card as a single static illustration, Lonergan uses framing, composition, and juxtaposition to establish relationships between images. A familiar tarot figure may appear almost like a window opening inside another scene, allowing the archetypal and contemporary worlds to comment upon one another.

The results range from playful and quietly beautiful to socially observant and deliberately uncomfortable. Throughout the deck, Lonergan uses these contrasts to explore how ancient archetypes continue to surface within the circumstances of modern life.

The accompanying hardcover guidebook expands on the thinking behind the deck and offers Lonergan’s interpretation of each card.
