Untold Tarot: The Lost Art of Reading Ancient Tarots Book

Untold Tarot presents historic styles of reading little known in the modern era. It teaches traditional ways of reading used for pre-twentieth-century decks, drawing upon older cartomantic arts such as blending and pairing cards, reading lines, and following "line of sight" to piece together untold stories according to the direction in which the characters are facing. The book also includes a selection of card spreads drawn from traditional French and Italian sources, plus methods of reading cards based on the author's own extensive research.

Untold Tarot: The Lost Art of Reading Ancient Tarots Book

The Way of Tarot shows that the entire deck is structured like a temple, or a mandala, which is both an image of the world and a representation of the divine. The authors use the sacred art of the original Marseille Tarot--created during a time of religious tolerance in the 11th century--to reconnect with the roots of the Tarot’s Western esoteric wisdom.

Why Collectors Love This Deck

  • A rare link in the Marseille lineage — bridging early Madenié decks and later makers like Burdel
  • Early Type II Marseille — capturing the moment the tradition begins to standardize
  • Preserves lost details —retaining elements lost in the worn woodblocks of earlier Madenié printings
  • Historically grounded — subtle heraldic references tied to Burgundy’s noble history
  • Limited to just 500 copies — a true small-run facsimile

A Closer Look at the Cards

The character of this edition reveals itself in a softer, more expressive interpretation of the Marseille tradition:

  • A gentle, watercolor-like patina — the color application creates subtle transparency and variation, softening the imagery across the deck
  • Expressive, slightly irregular linework — less rigid than later Marseille decks, with a sense of movement and individuality in each figure
  • Organic suit patterns — particularly in the Batons, where interwoven forms take on a natural, vine-like rhythm, suggesting a more symbolic, less mechanical structure
  • Distinctive court cards — well-balanced and visually composed, with calm expressions and a clarity that makes them especially engaging to work with
  • Subtle symbolic nuances — small variations and details that invite closer study and reward repeated viewing

The overall effect remains true to its 18th-century origins, with a softer and more fluid character that sets it apart from later, more standardized Marseille decks.

Cardmaker

Jean-Baptiste Madenié was a French master cardmaker working in Dijon and the son of Pierre Madenié (1709), whose deck is widely regarded as one of the earliest established Marseille patterns. His 1739 tarot reflects both continuity and evolution within this lineage, preserving visual elements that might otherwise have been lost to time.

Modern Edition

Yves Reynaud & Valentin Reynaud

Yves Reynaud, born in Montpellier in 1956 and based in Marseille since 1982, is a longtime student of esoteric traditions and a dedicated researcher of the Tarot of Marseille. Since 2004, he has focused on collecting and studying historical decks, conducting detailed iconographic and archival research into early cardmakers. Through Tarot de Marseille Heritage, he works to preserve these rare decks through carefully produced facsimile editions.

Working alongside him is his son, Valentin Reynaud, a graphic designer responsible for the visual reconstruction and production of these decks. Born in Marseille in 1997, Valentin combines technical precision with a deep engagement in the Marseille tradition.

Together, Yves and Valentin bring historical research and modern design together to create editions that remain faithful to the spirit and structure of the original decks.
