What Is Smudging?

Smudging is an ancient spiritual practice that uses the smoke of sacred plants to cleanse and protect. Across many Indigenous cultures, especially in the Americas, burning botanicals like sage is a ceremonial way to clear negative energy and carry prayers into the spirit world. At TarotArts, we honor this legacy by offering ethically sourced smudge wands that support Indigenous communities.

Respect & Cultural Awareness

Rooted in the spiritual traditions of Indigenous peoples, Smudging is a sacred ritual. Our sage and sacred herbs comes from Native-owned farms and ethical harvesters. We encourage everyone who uses these tools to do so with education, reverence, and a spirit of gratitude. When you smudge, you are engaging with a living tradition—please do so with respect and care.

How to Smudge with Intention

Prepare Your Tools

Choose a well-ventilated space and gather your materials: your smudge bundle, a fire-safe vessel (such as a ceramic bowl, cast iron cauldron, or abalone shell), and something to light the herbs. Many practitioners line the bottom of their vessel with ash, salt, or earth to aid in safe extinguishing.

Set Your Intention

Take a quiet moment before you light the bundle. What are you hoping to shift—energy, emotion, focus? Speak your purpose aloud or hold it clearly in your thoughts. Intention is the heart of the ritual.

Light the Bundle

With your vessel positioned beneath the bundle, use a candle or lighter to ignite the tip. Let it catch briefly, then gently blow out the flame so the herbs smolder and release smoke. Always keep the vessel underneath to catch any falling ash.

Direct the Smoke

Use your hand, a feather, or a fan to guide the smoke through your space or around your body.
Move counterclockwise to clear and release, or clockwise to invite and bless. Let each motion follow the flow of your intention.

End the Ceremony

Close your ritual by allowing the bundle to smolder to completion in your fire-safe dish. When you feel called to bring the ritual to a mindful close, you may gently press the smoking tip into the base of the same vessel. Many practitioners line the bottom with ash, salt, or earth—materials that not only assist in safely extinguishing the ember, but also symbolize a return to the elements.

Take a breath and offer thanks—to the plants, the practice, and the path you’re walking.
