Tarot de Besançon Miller 1780

$94.99

The Miller Besancon Tarot is considered to be one of the most splendid Eighteenth-Century Tarot decks.

It is believed that the religious figures on a pack of playing cards offended Catholics, so card makers were required to put something different on the cards. Thus, the Pope and Popess were removed and Greek gods Juno and Jupiter were added. This switch created a style that we now call a Besasçon deck. This deck style took root and flourished in Protestant areas where the replacement was welcomed. Like other Besançon decks, the Miller Tarot follows this pattern. One can notice a strong similarity with the Andreas Benedictur Gobl tarot from 1770. However, the bright colors and details make this deck unique. Tarot enthusiasts will revel in exploring this unique deck and discovering it’s place in the evolution of the Tarot. The original deck is housed in the British Museum and now expertly reproduced by Rinascimento Italian Style Art in a limited edition of 900 decks. Every detail from the color to the card size and card backs remain true to the original. Even the typical quirks of card manufacturing in the eighteenth century are preserved. This creates a visual and sensory art experience for the card holder allowing you to experience the deck as it would have been experienced in the eighteenth century. The package is further enhanced by the beautiful packaging options designed by artist Letizia Rivetti and hand-crafted by local artisans in Italy. The set is available in either a Book Shaped Box or a two piece Telescopic box. Both are covered with marbled paper and lined with red velvet. The set includes a booklet entitled Tarot in the German Countries from the 16th to the 18th Century, by Giordano Berti showing all the essential elements of this tradition. The booklet has two appendices: Tarot Factories in Europe in the Eighteenth Century, showing the extraordinary spread of these cards in the Germanic area, and Mozart and the Tarot, where it tells the great musician’s passion for this game. The Set also includes a leaflet with the divinatory meanings of the 78 cards and some methods of reading written by Giulia Orsini.
