Since reaching modern-day Mexico in 1779, the beloved card game Lotería, also known as Mexican Bingo, has seen many artful incarnations. Across Latinx cultures, it has served the multilayered purpose of practicing the Spanish language, bringing loved ones together, and of course, trying our luck.

Created by Xelena González, a member of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation, this deck honors her great-grandmother, a revered curandera. With stunning illustrations and poetic remedies, cards like La Sirena invite self-discovery, La Bandera urges you to raise your banner and find your allies, and La Luna reminds you that change is constant, with night giving way to dawn.

Xelena González

Xelena González is a storyteller, dancer, and author who values self-love and shares it through her writing and movement workshops for all ages. She has written award-winning books and introduced "tai chi storytelling" to over 100 schools, museums, and libraries worldwide through her author visits.

Jose Sotelo Yamasaki

San Antonio artist Jose Sotelo Yamasaki has painted since 2006, inspired by Mexican textiles, Mesoamerican geometry, and Japanese Zen art. His 2008 debut explored symmetry and balance. Travels in Mexico shaped “Cherry Blossom Marigold,” reflecting heritage. In “Dreams Are for Those Who Sleep,” he uses graphite and Zen-like focus to echo nature’s harmony.
