Making of the Deck

The Ebony Tarot was brought to life through a large-scale artistic collaboration involving more than 100 Afro-Montreal artists and creatives. Every card was carefully staged and photographed in the parks and open spaces of Greater Montreal, creating a harmonious connection between the urban landscape and ancestral symbolism. The creative process included a team of eight photographers, body painters, stylists, and designers. Longtime collaborator and body artist Sylvie (“Sly”) played a key role in crafting the deck’s look, alongside Lissa Sévigné, who personally shot more than 60 of the images. Each setting was thoughtfully scouted and styled, blending scenography with symbolism to reimagine tarot archetypes in a modern, cultural context. The result is more than a deck—it’s a living archive of Afro-descendant presence, pride, and power.

About the Creator

Lissa Sévigné is a Haitian-Canadian artist, psychosocial worker, and photographer based in Montreal. Her multidisciplinary background spans computer graphics, quantum theory, and over 15 years of community work supporting marginalized populations, especially those affected by substance use. Her passion for visual storytelling and emotional healing culminated in the creation of Ebony Tarot—a deck that blends psychology, spirituality, and art. Sévigné’s work is rooted in the belief that tarot is a visual language for self-reflection and empowerment, and she has created a tool that speaks directly to the lived experiences of Afro-descendant communities.
