Additional Information

"A unique feature of the Rider-Waite deck, and one of the of the principal reasons for its enduring popularity, is that all of the cards, including the Minor Arcana, depict full scenes with figures and symbols. Prior to the Rider-Waite Tarot, the pip cards of almost all tarot decks were marked only with the arrangement of the suit signs -- swords, wands, cups, and coins, or pentacles. The pictorial images on all the cards allow interpretations without the need to repeatedly consult explanatory text. The innovative Minor Arcana, and Pamela Colman Smith's ability to capture the subtleties of emotion and experience have made the Rider-Waite Tarot a model for the designs of many tarot packs." -- (from The Encyclopedia of Tarot, Volume III)

Arthur Edward Waite

Arthur Edward Waite (1857–1942) was a renowned mystic, occultist, and writer, best known as the co-creator of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. Born in America and raised in England, Waite began studying esoteric and psychic phenomena at 21. He later joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, becoming its Grand Master and shifting its focus from magic to mysticism, greatly influencing 20th-century occult practices.

A prolific author, Waite wrote extensively on mysticism, the Holy Grail, and esoteric traditions, laying the groundwork for modern Tarot. In 1910, he collaborated with artist Pamela Colman Smith to create the Rider-Waite Tarot deck, accompanied by his book The Pictorial Key to the Tarot. The deck's rich symbolism and universal appeal have made it a timeless tool for spiritual insight.

Waite's legacy extends beyond Tarot to his profound impact on the mystical and esoteric traditions of the 20th century, which continue to resonate with seekers today.

Pamela Coleman Smith

Pamela Colman Smith was an artist, illustrator, and writer born in 1878 in Pimlico, London. She studied art at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn before returning to England to work as an illustrator and theatrical designer. In 1909, she created the iconic artwork for the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck, commissioned by Arthur Edward Waite, who valued her talent and clairvoyant abilities. Despite her contributions, Smith did not gain financial recognition for the deck during her lifetime. Later, she moved to Cornwall, where she lived until her death in 1951. Today, her work is celebrated and widely revered in the tarot community.
