TAROT by FRANÇOIS HERI

Solothurn 1730, Switzerland

$64.00

limited edition of 1500 copies

François HERI (1680-1746), like his French and Swiss colleagues, produced two types of Tarots: a tarot Marseilles published in 1718 and this tarot from 1730, called a Besançon. The main difference from a traditional Marseilles deck is that Papesse and Pope cards are replaced with Juno and Jupiter.  It is believed that having religious figures in a deck of cards offended Catholics. It's also probable that this switch increased the accessibility of the deck with the Protestant population and helped it take root in the Protestant areas of France, southwestern Germany and Switzerland.
